MARCY’S PLAYGROUND continued

I wore a pink spaghetti strap tank top, a black, short, flowy skirt, and roman high-heeled sandals to work. A happy seductive summer outfit that would be a little much for a receptionist job anywhere else, but I worked in a sex club, right? And, pink is still virginal, isn’t it?

Busy, busy, day at work. Barely any time to read between swipes. I couldn’t get my huge smile off my face.

Evan showed up at noon.

“Ho-ho,” he said when he saw me.

I blushed.

“Somebody had a good night.”

“Whatever,” I said. “It’s just job research. I’m taking that dinner off as a tax deduction.”

He laughed. “I doubt you even pay taxes, little girl.”

“Okay, I admit it, I don’t yet, but I thought it was funny.”

“It was.”

He leaned over close to me. “You okay?”

Oh yeah.

I nodded.

A group of older women walked in, and Evan stepped out of the way. I said hello, swiped all their cards, and they walked in.

“Because you know if J.L. says anything that bothers you I’ll have a talk with him, and if he does anything that hurts you I’ll break his knees.”

I smiled. “That’s sweet.”

Evan reached out and gently touched my cheek. “I look out for my friends,” Evan said. “He’s my friend, and so are you. But he can look out for himself.”

A group of young guys walked in, and Evan moved out of the way again so I could swipe them in.

“Well, I see you’re busy,” he said. He handed me his card, and I swiped him in. “And in a minute or so, I will be too.” He made an over-comically leer at me, and walked in.

I twisted around to stare at his butt.

More people came in. I must have been glowing because I got lots of compliments, not only on my outfit, but on my skin.

Whatever.

Evan came out, looking happy and relaxed.

“So, you’re coming over my house tonight?”

“Huh?”

“To have dinner with Heather?”

“Oh, oh yeah.”

“Seven?”

“Yeah, sure, that will work.”

He leaned over and kissed me on the cheek.

“See you then,” he said.

Somehow, suddenly, this all struck me as weird. I’m a still sort of virgin, working in a sex club, going to have dinner with the wife of a patron who likes to…what do they say? Pull up to the bumper. Boy, there’s a rap song in there somewhere.

Howard, the seventy-year-old came in.

“Hey, girly.”

“Hey, handsome.”

He cackled.

Swipe.

Forget going to college in the fall for psychology; I was learning a heck of a lot about psychology right here.

Finally it calmed down. I was reading the new Stephanie Meyers book, and I wanted to get back to it.

At three o’clock the phone rang. I expected it would be someone asking for directions. It wasn’t.

“Marcy?” The voice was low and full of hope. Jean-Luc.

“J.L.?”

“Hey,” he said softly drawing out the one word.

“Hi,” I said softly back.

“Evan said he didn’t have your number,” he said. “He said he wrote his number down for you, but you never called him.”

I thought about it; that was true.

“I didn’t want to wait to call you,” Jean-Luc said. “Is it okay to call you on your work line?”

“I should probably give you my cell,” I said. I rattled off my number.

“Call you right back, sweetie.”

My cell rang, my general ringtone, Fireworks, by Katy Perry. Maybe I should dedicate that to Jean-Luc only.

“Hi, baby,” he said.

“Hello,” I said shyly, and blushed.

“I just wanted to see if you’re…you know. Okay? Are you okay?”

“Yeah. Yeah, I’m good.”

“No regrets?”

I thought about it. “No.”

He let out a loud sigh. It sounded like relief. “Good. Sorry I had to rush this morning. I had a bitch of a meeting. Sorry, a nightmare of a meeting.”

I smiled.

“Go out to dinner with me tonight?” he asked.

“Okay. Ah, no. I can’t.”

“Hot date?” he teased.

“I’m having dinner with Heather.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah, so I can tell her all about you,” I said in a teasing voice.

“I thought good girls don’t kiss and tell,” he said.

“I don’t kiss and tell,” I said. “But I might kiss and ask.”

I thought I could hear him smile on the other end of the line.

“Hold on,” I said.

Barbara-Sue, a sixty-something hippy looking woman with long curly blue hair, came in. We talked for a few seconds, and I swiped her in. I picked up the phone to resume my conversation.

“I’ll let you go, Lafferty. I just wanted to check up on you. Let you know I’m thinking about you.”

“Thanks.”

“You’ve got my number now. How about Friday?”

“That would be great. Can we continue our lessons?”

He laughed. He made his voice deep, like the mystical genie. “Your wish is my command.”

We hung up.

You know what was the best thing that ever happened to me? Getting fired from A & M.

I stopped Bycasino at Cold Stone Creamery on the way home from work. I was going to get a small cup for myself, but I decided on getting a whole gallon to give to Heather.

I had to resist digging into it on the ride home with the plastic spoons they packed in the bag. Was that nerves and shyness about going to tell Heather about Jean-Luc? Maybe. I never realized how much I ate sweets when I was emotional.

Which I guess was all the time now.

Of course the emotion was changing from shy to wanting.

But that’s a good thing, right?

I arrived at Heather and Evan’s and Evan opened the door. He was wearing green cargo shorts and a t-shirt. He had a computer bag over his shoulder.

“Hello, beautiful,” he said, and gave me a brief kiss on the lips.

“Oh, that’s good,” I said, without really thinking about it.

“I’ve created a monster.”

“But it’s a good monster, right?”

He smiled. “Yeah, right.”

“I’m going to go work in the cafe and leave you girls alone. I’ll see you in an hour or two.”

“Okay.”

Heather came in from the back porch. “I didn’t make dinner. I ordered pizza from Dominos. I didn’t know what you liked, so I just got double cheese.”

“Cheese is fine. I brought ice cream.”

“Good, I didn’t make dessert. Want to sit out on the porch? It’s hot, but I’ve got the fan going.”

“Sure.”

She got me a glass of ice water, and we sat on the porch.

“I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the idea that you’re so okay with Evan going to Melody’s,” I said. “Oh. Is this okay to talk about this?”

“Sure,” she said. “Listen, over half of American marriages end in divorce. And I think the main reason is because people cheat. Then they feel bad about it. I love Evan. I don’t want to deny him something he likes. I love him completely. I accept him. I don’t want him creeping around behind my back, skulking around on the streets, feeling guilty, and maybe in danger.”

“I guess I can understand that,” I said.

“So you know how Melody’s got its name, right?” she asked me.

“No,” I said. “I have no idea.”

“Okay,” Heather said. “Like a gazillion years ago, like in the late sixties I guess, apparently Ms. J. was a bit of a wild child.”

I raised my eyebrows.

“I mean, it was the sixties,” Heather said. “So, she was this major babe.”

I raised my eyebrows again.

“I know, I know. I’m just telling you. So picture it. She’s twenty years old. She’s hot. It’s the era of free love.”

“Go on,” I said.

“So she has a twin sister, who is even more of a loose cannon. They go to all the bars. Smoke pot. Kiss strangers. Wear go-go boots. Dance on tables. Whatever. One night, the sister meets this guy, and they go to the back of the club to make out. Ms. J. is talking to another guy, a friend of his I guess. Anyway, after a while, Ms. J. gets nervous. Can’t find her sister. Goes out to the back alley. The first guy is beating and raping her sister. Ms. J. starts to scream, but the guy she’s with covers her mouth and holds her down for a minute as the first guy finishes. Ms. J. is in shock. By the time her guy lets her go, and she runs to her sister, her sister is dead.”

“Oh my God.”

“Right.”

“Both guys disappear, never to be found. Bartender didn’t know them. No one in the club knew them. Cops didn’t know them.”

“Holy shit,” I said.

“Sister’s name was Melody,” Heather said.

“Wow.”

“Yeah, so Ms. J. figured that people are always going to want sex. But she could make a place where it was really safe. Where she had everyone’s information. Their sexual history. Record of their comings and goings. Accountability. Everything. On her watch nothing like that was ever going to happen again.”

“Wow,” I said again.

“Yeah. Serious. I admire her. She could have turned into a prude, or gone insane or something. But instead she made a place where people could know that they could be really, really safe.

“People are who they are,” Heather said. “I don’t expect everyone to get my choices. But I’m really grateful a place like Melody’s exists. I don’t have to worry about Evan lying and saying he’s working late. I don’t have to worry that he’s in some dangerous bar at night picking up some sleazy bimbo who is going to try and steal him away from me. I don’t have to worry that he’s going to look at me and say, wow, she’s great, but if only… He’s an amazing guy, and I’m pretty damn lucky—and I know it.”

“He’s lucky, too,” I said.

“Damn straight,” Heather said.

“Not that you need to tell me any of this,” I said. “It’s none of my business.”

“But it’s the truth. It’s the simple, real truth. One thing you’ll find about me and Evan, is that we’re real. Also, that when we make a friend, we’re friends for life, all the way.” She smiled at me. I smiled back.

“What’s weird to me is that you work at Melody’s. No offense, but you don’t seem the type.”

“I don’t think Mr. and Mrs. J. wanted to hire me,” I said. “That’s part of the reason I’m so glad the three of you were willing to help me. I feel like a Bycasino giriş minnow swimming in a shark pool.”

“Hah-ha. Speaking of sharks, how did it go with Jean-Luc?” Heather asked.

I blushed.

“Ho-ho,” Heather said.

“No ho-ho,” I said. “No ho-ho-ho, either. It’s summer time, not Christmas.”

“That blush looked a lot like Christmas to me.”

I blushed harder. My cheeks felt warm enough to light kindling.

“Well…” I said. “I’m not sure what to ask you. I mean, that was like my first real date with him. Actually, it was my first real date, ever. I know I’m using him to learn so, um, like, with dates, aren’t I supposed to wait awhile before I, you know, like go around the bases and stuff?”

Heather smiled at me.

“Or can I, like, go faster because I’m learning?”

“If I didn’t know him I would say you would be better off going really slow. But I’ve known him for four years, and Evan has known him even longer. So I’d say with him you can go as fast as you want. Did he pressure you?”

“Just the opposite.”

“Okay, well then.”

We were silent for a minute.

“Cause I really, really, really want to have sex.”

“Only three reallys?” she said, teasing me.

“Maybe four,” I said.

We smiled at each other.

“I’m so embarrassed. Eighteen is like super old to be a virgin.”

“I didn’t lose my virginity until I was eighteen. And it was with a forty-two year old guy.”

“No way.”

She sighed, and not in a happy way. “Yeah. Way.”

Ick.

“So you’re much better off with Jean-Luc… and Evan.”

“And Evan?”

“Well, Evan said he was going to…you know…” She made a circular motion with her hand that I couldn’t interpret. “How are you going to, you know, if you don’t have Evan help you?”

Well this sucks. I’m so naive I don’t even know what it is I don’t know.

Jeesh. “Umm…”

Ding-dong.

“Pizza’s here.”

We both jumped up and went toward the door. “Let me pay for the pizza,” I said.

“Nope. You bought the ice cream.”

“But you’re giving me lessons.”

She smiled at me.

She opened the door and that ended the discussion. The pizza delivery guy was someone I went to school with. I waved. No way was there going to be any discussion in front of him.

“Hot pizza for a hot summer day and two hot girls,” he said.

I tried not to roll my eyes; lines like that were probably good for tips.

Heather waited until the door was firmly closed before she asked, “So when are you going to see Jean-Luc again?”

“Tomorrow,” I said.

“Ho-ho,” she said.

Jeesh.

We were busy eating, and then she started talking about school. I was actually too full to have dessert. Evan came back, and we watched a movie called The Gladiator, which I had sort of heard about, but never seen.

“Hey, sweet mochi, is there anything else you need from us tonight?” Evan asked.

Yeah, like, to understand, like, everything. I shook my head.

“All right, beautiful,” Evan said. “When are we going to see you again?”

I shrugged.

“Shrug it is,” he said.

I laughed.

He gave me a quick kiss on the lips, Heather gave me a quick kiss on the lips, and I left. Hhhm.

Friday I had off from Melody’s. I only had two more days before my parents came home from vacation, and I wanted to make the most of them.

At 5:30 Jean-Luc called me.

“Hey Lafferty, want to go to see Guardians of the Galaxy tonight?”

“Sure.”

“Nothing better than a talking raccoon,” Jean-Luc said.

“Summer sex with a virgin,” I said.

He laughed so loudly I had to take the phone away from my ear.

“You’re right. That’s better. I’ve never had that before, but I know it’s better, WAAAAAY better.”

“You know what’s even better than that?” I said, and hoped I sounded coy.

“What?” he asked.

Ut-oh. Am I really going to say this?

“Both,” I said.

He laughed.

“Consecutively or concurrently?”

It took me a minute to decipher the words: one after the other or at the same time.

“Gentleman’s choice,” I said.

“Aw, baby, no wonder I’m falling for you. Text me your address, and I’ll pick you up.”

“Is this a dress up movie? Like the Rocky Horror Picture Show?” I asked.

“Oh God,” he said. “You’re too good for words. Yeah, wear a sexy Magenta costume and a rain coat.”

I’d never actually seen the Rocky Horror Picture Show, only heard of it, so I had no idea what he was talking about, but it sounded funny.

“I’ll check the times,” he said. “Remember, text me your address.”

“Got it,” I said.

We hung up. I dug the napkin with Evan’s number on it out of my purse and dialed him. I asked for Heather’s number. Then I asked her what I should wear for my movie date.

“I think he likes you so much it doesn’t really matter,” she said.

“Really?”

“Really,” she said.

Huh.

“Just wear jeans and a t-shirt,” she said. “Maybe a red t-shirt. Guys have a thing for red. It means go to them, not stop.”

“Really?”

“Really. See you’re learning stuff Bycasino güncel giriş already.”

“I’m going to have to start taking notes,” I said.

She laughed, and we hung up.

Bevvie knocked at my door a minute later.

“Oh my God, you lost your virginity!” It was the first thing out of her mouth.

“I did not.”

“Spill.”

“I have to get ready.”

“Oh my God, you have a boyfriend. Who is it? Is it someone from school? It’s someone from work. It’s someone you work with, isn’t it?”

“Bevvie, I can’t talk right now.”

“Okay, okay. But I am coming over tomorrow, and I am going to get all the details.”

Yikes.

She pointed at me. “I will see you. Tomorrow.” She turned around and left. One day reprieve.

Jean-Luc picked me up at seven p.m. for the seven-thirty movie.

“Nice shirt,” was the first thing he said.

I smiled.

I tried to mimic the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. “All the better to seduce you with, my dear.”

“You don’t need to try to seduce me,” he said. “I’ve wanted to steal you away since I first saw Evan talking to you.” Then he smiled at me. “Ready for a movie?”

I nodded.

We got there early enough that a paisley design was playing on the screen and a music version of bad eighties music was being piped in through the speakers.

“Ever made out in a movie theater?” Jean-Luc whispered in my ear.

I shivered.

“Unt-uh,” I said.

“First time for everything,” he said and smiled. Then he reached over and held my hand.

The lights went down, and he gave me a kiss that melted my insides and everything else.

Great. Now I have to sit through an hour and a half with wet underwear.

The movie was awesome, and soon I was in outer space with Star-Lord, Rocket, Groot, and the crew. I felt Jean-Luc’s arm reach around me and settle on the back of my chair, and I had to suppress a giddy laugh. This was like a real date! I was on a date!

Then I got lost in the movie again. Add another thing to things I love besides football, reading, and eating sugar: movies.

Oh, yeah, and sex.

I think.

I really want to find out.

“Hey,” I whispered in Jean-Luc’s ear. “Is there a porn movie that stars football players reading and eating ice cream while having sex?”

“No,” he whispered back, “But there’s one just like that with cheerleaders.”

I laughed.

“Watch it with me?” I asked.

“Oh, baby.”

The movie ended. I really liked it. We stayed to watch all the credits. Which was good, because they did that thing where they have a little bonus clip at the end, although there was obviously some reference about it that Jean-Luc got that I didn’t. When we were the last ones in the theater Jean-Luc kissed me. Oh, I might not know yet if I like sex, but I really like kissing.

“Want to go back to my place?” Jean-Luc asked.

“Uh-huh,” I said.

“Good,” he said.

He held my hand on the way back to the parking lot. I felt pressure to make conversation. Like I should be asking him questions and telling him stories, but I couldn’t think about what.

For me the pressure skyrocketed on the way to his apartment. Was this going to be the time we actually did it?

He lived downtown, on the top floor of a high-rise. I expected his apartment to be all super slick modern bachelor guy, but it totally wasn’t. It was mostly decorated in frumpy old lady.

I looked around. Faded off-white crochet doilies. Knick-knacks. China figurines. Tiffany style lamps. Lots of stuff.

He saw me looking.

“I rent the place furnished,” he said.

“That’s mine,” he pointed to a huge TV. “That’s mine,” he pointed to a comfy-looking black leather chair. “That’s mine,” he pointed to a black bookcase filled with law books. He touched my chest over my heart and lifted one eyebrow.

I smiled.

“Wanna dance?” he asked.

I looked around, confused.

He got out his phone, fiddled with it. Music filled the room. I didn’t know who sang it, but the words were “I want to know what love is, I want you to show me.”

I snorted.

He changed the song. Again, I didn’t know the artist. “It feels like the first time; it feels like the very first time.”

I crossed my arms over my chest. But hey, the funny choices did break up the tension.

“Here we go,” he said.

I also didn’t know who sang this one, but her voice was soulful. “At last, my love has come along.” Jean-Luc hugged me, and we swayed back and forth to the music. He hummed along to the melody. “My lonely days are over and life is like a song.”

He spun me around and dipped me, totally out of time with the music. I laughed.

“This music is pretty,” I said.

“It’s a classic.”

“Never heard it,” I said.

“Oh Lafferty, the things I could teach you.”

“Can we start now?” I asked.

“Yeah,” he said. He kissed me, and it was if my lips sparkled.

“Is kissing always that good?” I mumbled against his lips. It was a dumb thing to say; I don’t know why I said it.

“No,” he said.

We continued to sway back and forth. I waited for him to make a move. He didn’t.

Oh.

I slid my hand up and down his back, and then up and down his side.

“You know,” I drawled. “In the hotel. I don’t think I did that quite right. I need practice. A repeat. Do over. Re-test.” I paused. “For extra credit.”
